TIGERS TAKE THE TITLE

KON-X WALES ANGLESEY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON 2013/14

Round up Saturday 24th of May 2014

Aberffraw Assassins

What is it about the KonX Wales Anglesey Football league, that season after season; the title is decided on the last day of the season. Last season Pentraeth needed only a draw on the last day against Morawelon and it won them the league Title. This time, Morawelon travelled to Aberffraw knowing that any result for them other than a win would see Menai Bridge Tigers crowned Champions. Tigers, having defeated Morraz’ on home turf last week-end could do no more than sit back and hope, though they probably felt that beffro’ had nothing to play for with Cemaes Bay having piped them for third place...............but that’s not how it works

Morawelon having fired their first blank league match last week needed goals today and began with the wind at their backs enjoyed a great deal of possession but Beffro defended well – how many times has that been said this season. When they could they played it out, but any doubt and it was `wellied clear’. There were few chances in a tight first half. A Jordan Murphy corner kick, curled in with the wind, seemed destined for the roof of the net but skimmed the bar at the last minute, and a long clearance bounced towards the roof of the net but keeper Gerallt Roberts pushed it over. The half ended goal-less leaving Morawelon needing to step it up a gear to take the Title, and for a spell they did just that, and Roberts produced a magnificent save as a thundering Jordan Murphy drive was heading for the top corner and resulted in a spell of four consecutive corner kicks, the last of which saw a header skim the bar.
But Aber were not content to sit back and Nick Murphy twice pulled off good stops and needed lengthy treatment after coming out to deny Andrew Jones. Then he managed to clutch the ball just beneath his cross-bar as a long clearance caught the wind and looked to have bounced over him. As the time ticked away, the Moraz had to go for it and the Beffro’ second half plan, to catch them on the break began to work as Murphy became the busier keeper. Gary Bolton almost scored when his pace saw him reach the ball before the keeper but was forced to go wide and the ball he played towards the goal was quickly cleared. Thomas then fired inches wide and a corner was headed inches over as Moraz chased the game, but the opening goal came at the opposite end. With five minutes remaining, a neat interchange of passes saw Andrew Jones running in on goal, keeper Murphy blocked the ball only to see it fall to Gary Bolton just outside the six yard box, wide to the left, and he cut inside a defender to curl his shot just wide of the keepers despairing dive and inside the far post, to the delight of the Aber’ fans – and watching Tigers supporters.
If that was not enough of a blow to the title challengers, what followed certainly was, and it was self inflicted, and needless. The game was about to restart, but the match official held it up as he dismissed a Moraz’ player for dissent, and within a minute of the re-start, and with the visitors defenders momentarily switched off, a through ball left two beffro players bearing down on goal and with Murphy coming out to close down the attacker with the ball, he simply slid it wide of him allowing Iwan Lewis to run on to it and `walk’ the ball into the net. As frustration kicked in two more Moraz players were shown red to end such a good season on a sour note. Buy that should not detract from a good all round performance from Aberffraw in front of a decent crowd.

So the Moaz’ goal machine that rattled in 87 league goals, failed to find the net in their final two games that Probably mattered most and the title belongs to Menai Bridge Tigers, - who defeated Morawelon both home and away, who are crowned Champions of the konX Wales Anglesey Football League and Morawelon – who were Champions in season 2011/12, are Runners-up for the second consecutive season 2012/13 and 2013/14.

Picture: By league secretary: From a Jordan Murphy corner kick, curled into the wind, the ball appears destined for the roof of the net, but at the last minute skimmed the bar.

The only other league match produced a totally unexpected result, maybe not the fact that Trearddur Bay Reserves won against Holy Isle but by the margin of the win, as the Isle have been enjoying a good run of results recently. But the Bay were in `seventh Heaven’, with doubles from Craig Moore, and Mike Jones, and singles from, Cory Desmond, Owain Jones, and Dewi Thomas, and Anthony Platt hitting the consolation goal for the Isle.
