THE MATCH OF THE YEAR

Saturday 8th of OCTOBER 2016

No doubt about the Match of the Day in the KWAFL, it was Leaders Llangoed welcoming title rivals Holyhead Town and it was a classic, fully justifying its top billing.

Watching League Chairman, Dennis Bryant commented.... “it’s one of the best games I’ve seen on the Island, two excellent teams and well officiated by Stephen Jones, Bethesda and a credit, not just to football on Anglesey but to football in North Wales.

Llangoed were looking for a good start against a team with two games in hand on them and they got it when Craig Jones met a Carwyn Williams cross to head home. Holyhead came back into the game but went further behind, the hosts doubling the score as Mitchell Jones broke clear to run on and fire home and the hosts led two nil at the break. If that seemed a `comfortable’ lead it was far from it, home keeper RHYS OWEN pulled off four outstanding saves one going full length to keep out a thundering Tom Roberts free kick going in at the foot of the far post and another from a corner when he risked a boot in the face as he plucked the ball of the foot of Mathew Thomas
The second half began at a heck of a pace, and saw Town deservedly pull one back through Tom Hadley, heading home after a Welsh header came back off the woodwork and with Jacky Welsh and Tom Roberts beginning to pull the strings it was game on, or so we thought, but the influential Carwyn Williams found
himself clear, as two defenders collided, and he struck a left foot drive in to the net to regain the two goal lead advantage [3-1]. Holyhead brushed the set back to one side and were soon level at three all with goals from Mathew Thomas and inspirational Captain Tom Roberts. Yet again Llangoed regained the lead, Craig Jones with his second [4-3], leaving the hosts with some fifteen minutes to hold on for three valuable points. but yet again Holyhead responded with Shaun Davies heading home from the six yard box to make it all square [4-4]
Even then in the short time remaining either side could have won it, Craig Jones in a one on one with the keeper could have made it a hat-trick and winner but narrowly failed and just after Tom Hadley had the chance to win it but fired just over

Llangoeds Nick Williams[4] may be out numbered by Holyhead players, but he gets his challenge in to win the ball.

Llangoeds Keeper, Rhys Owen, in orange, bravely risks a `boot in the face' as he plucks the ball off the boot of the Holyhead striker.
