BRO BOUNCE BACK TO AFL WITH LATE WINNER

TO TAKE OPENING DAY POINTS

LLANGOED & DISTRICT 0 V BRO GORONWY 1

After what was a most unusual `pre-season’, where the Gwynedd League not only took the KonX Wales Anglesey league Champions but also two other clubs as well. Then we had two clubs that made application to join, one having stepped down from a senior League, the other with no league to go to following the demise of the Caernarfon & District league after the Gwynedd League took three of its teams. Both were accepted and then one rejoined the league it had resigned from, and the other pulled out after being included in the fixtures and cup draws in the week before kick-off.
So when the KonX Wales Anglesey league finally kicked off season 2014/15 it did so with NINE teams in membership, but whilst secretary Dave McCann was obviously disappointed with the number, he was quick to point out that, “ it’s all about quality not quantity, and I do not envisage scores of 9-0 or double figures. Neither do I expect one or two clubs to dominate as in previous seasons, not if the results from the friendlies against `senior clubs’ are anything to go by.
The leagues two `newcomers’, Bro Goronwy and Gaerwen Reserves both faced tough away encounters. To class Bro as newcomers does their recent success an injustice, but on their return, they had a battle on their hands against a youthful but quality Llangoed & district team, which showed in the fact that visiting keeper Sweetser-Hawkes was the man of the match, making three or four excellent saves. His best being when a Wayne Thomas shot beat him but hit the wood-work leaving Richard Owen to rifle the ball in to the net, but amazingly he was back on his feet to block the point blank effort. Tom Parry was denied by the keeper and Wayne Thomas by the post, whilst at the opposite end a john Littlemore effort was cleared off the line. It looked like the two sides would share the points until four minutes from time when Bro snatched the winner. Littlemore found a yard of space in the danger area and struck his shot low down to the keeper’s right only for the ball to bounce back off the post; strike gloves man Luke Robinson’s rear end and finish in the back of the net.
With so little time left Bro were able withstand the final assaults by Llangoed and bag three points. But as Paul Scholes was quick to point out, “... was a win we never deserved, but then, to play below your normal game level and still pick up maximum points is the sign of a team that is destined to be there [or there about] when the trophies are handed out
