BRO GORONWY END CEMAES UNBEATEN RECORD

By McCann Dave

TO EXTEND THEIR LEAD AT THE TOP.

The Big Clash of the day in the KonX Wales Anglesey Football league saw Cemaes Bay, unbeaten all season and third in the league – three points adrift of the top, looking to take all three points in their visit to leaders Bro Goronwy and displace them as the top.

hOSTS, Bro Goronwy were – before kick-off, also unbeaten in the league and are the only club to deny Cemaes all three points when the two drew 2-2 at Cemaes early in the season. On that note, Cemaes had only conceded a total of three goals in the league and two of those were by Bro in that 2-2 draw. So the large crowd that turned up did so in anticipation of a very good game between two quality teams that are looking to lift the Championship Trophy come May.

Cemaes Bay kicked off with confidence and in determined mood, and early visitors pressure in the box saw a Bro defender panic, and `dive-in’ with a reckless challenge bringing down Huw Torr, leaving Match Official, Alwyn Griffiths, Bethesda, pointing to the spot from where Shaun Pritchard neatly tucked it away to put the Bay in front.[10]. The visitors were understandably elated at the start they had made but four minutes later they were deflated when Andy Williams ran on to a ball played over the top to drive the ball home past a covering defender on the goal line and level the score
The hundred plus crowd were being treated to an excellent game of football that was a credit to the KWAFL and Bro came out for the second period looking every part leaders and Taylor Jones finished off a neat move with a simple tap-in to nudged them ahead.[48] The goal lifted the hosts and four minutes later Taylor Jones tucked away his second to make it 3-1, and he was presented with the perfect opportunity to complete his hat-trick when match official Alwyn Griffiths once again pointed to the spot. He stepped up confidently to drive the ball goal wards where Dan Jones, voted keeper of the season last season pulled off a fine save. The save gave the visitors heart and they set about pulling it back, but the usually dominating Steve Mason had been well shackled by Richard Williams, and despite the Bay giving it all they had it was the hosts who were running the show. With four minutes left on the clock., a neat ball over the top saw keeper Dan Jones coning out for a ball that Andy Williams was going in for with Williams getting his head to it first to loop the ball over him and in to the net to crown a sparkling performance and put Bro six points ahead of their nearest rivals.
A quick look at next week’s cup fixtures throws up the chance of another mouth watering clash as the two surprisingly meet again at Cemaes on Friday night in the Quarter-final of the William HILL Elias cup. The Bay will be out for immediate revenge whilst Bro will be just as eager to win and emphasise their standing as the league’s TOP TEAM.
