BRO TURN THE SCREW IN SECOND HALF

By McCann Dave

TO BOOK SECOND QUARTER-FINAL TO ADD TO THEIR SEMI PLACE.

Sat 25th October 2014 Elias Cup Round 1
Bro Goronwy 5 Connor Jones 24,Jordan Scott 53,Taylor Jones 72 & 85,Liam Griffiths 73.
Llangoed & District 1 Dylan Williams 29.
With Bro already in one semi-final and two Cup Quarter-final they were still looking to produce the performance that would gain a 1st home cup win of the season and with the wind picking up just before kick-off it looked like it could be the proverbial game of two halves at Cae Nerys. Llangoed kicked off with wind advantage but failed to use them in their favour, as Tom Parry blazed high and wide and after taking a precise pass from Callum Graves his shot lacked any power to cause problems. Visiting keeper Luke Robinson was clearing the full length of the pitch with his kicks but not directing the ball into the key danger areas.
Bro, dispite playing playing against the wind, began to take a grip on the game getting the ball on the deck and play around Llangoed's midfield workers.
Tom Galloway was unlucky to watch his powerful header cleared away before the home side took the lead after 24 minutes.
Youngster Connor Jones ,fancying his chances from 30 yards, curled a classic strike over the stricken Robinson and dropped into the net.
Llangoed's heads failed to drop and were soon back level in the tie with Graves causing all the danger with a dipping free kick that had to be tipped over by Sweetser-Hawkes over and the resulting corner set piece was to be crucial. After an initial clearance Graves wicked delivery could only be clawed away by Hawkes from underneath his own crossbar leaving Dylan Williams to neatly apply the finish for 1-1.
Llangoed fancied their chances of going in at the break at least a goal to the good but could not administer any clear cut chances.
It was Goronwy who were to have the final chances of the half, Taylor Jones striking the foot of the post and Liam Griffiths having to settle to be crowded out at the end of a trademark mazy run.
Half-Time 1-1.
Up against it in the 2nd period Llangoed knew they had to be clinical with any forthcoming chances and had a sniff in the opening seconds.Matthew Owen finding himself bearing down on goal only for Hawkes to be quickly out and clear with his feet.
But Bro were beginning to turn the screw, applying the pressure on the away sides defence, earning a succession of corners keeping them on full alert.
After 53 minutes pressure told and Bro regained the lead.
Heroics from gloves man Robinson , firstly to deny Liam Griffiths and then secondly denying Connor Jones, both from point blank was not enough as the ball fell to Jordan Scott who buried his chance from close range.
Scott was denied a double, his strong header coming back off the goal line from the defenders clearance, before Taylor Jones made it 3-1, Lee threading a ball into Jack Baron who was thwarted by Robinson only for Jones to be left with a tap in into the net.
Immediately it was to be 4-1, Liam Griffiths unleashing a dipper from long range which crept under the sprawling keepers body.
There was still time for Bro to bag another and put a seal on their best home performance all season, the ball kindly falling for Jones who rounded the keeper and confidently found the net.
The final action was to be from home captain Dylan Jones, cannoning a header back off the bar to safety.
Full-Time 5-1.
