BWLCH CAR-BOOT CUP - VALLEY WIN BUT MAES Y BRYN TIE

By McCann Dave

IS ABANDONED DUE TO SERIOUS INJURY

The four teams in group B of the BWLCH CAR-BOOT CUP met on Bank Holiday Monday in the first of the League group games.
Maes y Bryn v Llanfairfechan & Valley v Pentraeth

Pentraeth Reserves travelled to Valley and if they needed any inspiration then they only needed to look at their first team who that morning had defeated Gaerwen 10 v 2 in front of a crowd of 376 – which included the visiting `Ground Hoppers’, in a carnival atmosphere with stalls, half-time penalty shoot-out for the youngsters. Pentraeth committee are to be applauded for the occasion arrangements and the management and players for the result, but back to the reserves. They found Valley in determined and confident mood and obviously were never going to match their first team and went behind to a Justin Willams strike that gave the hosts a first half lead.
In the second period Connor Williams doubled their advantage but when the referee later pointed to the penalty spot and Connor Williams stepped up to take it, he was denied by the keeper Cox. The `miss’ could have proved costly as Pentraeth pulled one back when Jamie Roberts tucked away a right wing cross but despite their efforts they were unable to grab the equalizer.

The second game in the group saw Maes y Bryn entertain Llanfairfechan Reserves in a match that was looking interesting to say the least. Neither side had control of the game and chances were quite even at either end, but none were converted and it was still goal-less mid-way through the half. When the hosts made the break through it was with the aid of an own goal. The visitors, though, were still pressing and it was anyone’s game until `disaster’ struck. A seemingly inoculate challenge ended with Rhys Griffiths still grounded and in considerable pain. It was clear that the injury was serious and match official Mr Stephen Jones of Bethesda called an immediate halt to proceedings, ensured the player was kept warm and as comfortable as possible, and an Ambulance called. Despite the ambulance not having appeared Mr S. Jones, quite rightly abandoned the game. It was just as well, because some of the spectators who remained were pointing out that it was an hour after the incident that the ambulance arrived.
An update on the condition of Rhys Griffiths was given by Lorrie Murphy, secretary of Llanfairfechan Reserves who said – last night, in her e- Mail :-

“ Just to let you know Rhys has broken his tibia and fibula and will have an operation tomorrow - he seems in reasonably good spirits considering and to confirm Rhys was wearing shin pads - typical of modern design - light weight...” Unfortunately these things happen in football”.
Rhys home address is Trevor Villa, Penmaenmawr Road, LLANFAIRFECHAN GWYNEDD LL33 0PN “
