IN A `CLASSIC FINAL WITH A NINETIETH MINUTE PLUS WINNER

CEMAES CELEBRATE CUP CAPTURE
IN THRILLING FINISH TO THE KONX WALES DARGIE CUP
Yet again Nantporth witnesses a very entertaining Dargie Cup final with a thrilling finale that avoided the usual need for extra-time and penalties to decide the winners. Cemaes Bay had been leading from the forty fourth minute only for Valley to draw level, in their best spell, with some fifteen minutes remaining and then hit the upright with a couple of minutes to go, only for the Bay to break clear and score the winner. But let’s start at the beginning.

The fact that Valley had recently enjoyed a 4-0 league verdict over Cemaes, was probably the reason the game began with both sides a `bit cagy’, specially Cemaes, but Valley were the quicker to settle and enjoyed plenty of possession and with Barry HAIGH leading the attack well, dropping off his marker[s] and with pace and skill created a couple of half chances for those around him. The Valley midfield was clearly getting on top with very little seen of the Bay as an attacking force, other than the odd counter attack. Leaving their defenders having to work their socks off to keep Valley at bay, and during this spell Full Back Lewis Connor certainly proved his worth with a tremendous performance.

Slowly but surely Cemaes began to claw their way back and their forwards suddenly looked dangerous, particularly as Steve Mason was making space on the right and putting in some inviting crosses. After one mazy run he chipped the ball over the keeper to Huw Torr, running in around the centre of the six yard box, at a perfect height for him to head home to the unguarded net....................... But his header flew just wide of the far post. It was a glorious chance missed but when Mason repeated the move just on half-time, youngster Torr slammed it home and the Bay enjoyed a half-time lead.

The restart saw Cemaes still with the upper hand but it all changed with a couple of substitutions and suddenly Cemaes were under constant pressure. Keeper J.Arron Jones pulled off two brilliant saves, and then spilled a long range effort but recovered before anyone could get to the loose ball. Valley were now pressing and some good play down the flank by Jenkins unlocked the defence and they had a perfect chance to level with an almost open goal, but headed inches over. It now looked as if it was just a matter of time as Valley stormed forward and Casey Boylan headed the equalizer. Now it was valleys for the taking.......with the Bay defence and midfield called in to man the pumps. Then, with minutes left on the clock, Ashley Hughes –scorer of two long range efforts last week, thought he had won the game with a long range missile from some twenty five yards, but the ball rebounded off the upright and cleared. Then with the ninety minutes up, a Valley attack broke down and saw the ball cleared to the half way line, where Steve Mason helped it over the head of one player before setting off on a run chased by defenders to blast home a brilliant solo goal worthy of winning any cup, though tough on Valley.

But that’s football, had Ashley’s powerful shot not hit the middle of the upright it would have gone ` in-off’ and by the time the game had restarted it would have been full time and all over for Cemaes. But it didn’t, it rebounded out, later got played to Steve Mason, who put three of his attributes to good use [ his pace, skill and power ], to race through and score an excellent solo goal and the CUP went to Cemaes, the Man of the Match award to Steve Mason. Both presented by the Anglesey League Chairman, Mr Dennis Bryant on behalf of KonX Wales Manaaging Director, Mr Aled Williams being called away before kick-off.

Forgetting – for a moment the MOM award, everyone in the Cemaes squad, managers and assistants all played their part, and it is worth remembering that Cemaes can look to the future with confidence , the winning Cemaes side tonight included, along with goal scorer Huw Torr, four or five of their u18’s who celebrated winning the league recently.
AS Cemaes celebrated the night away, Valley will be reflecting on their first defeat since October, looking to put it behind them as on Tuesday night they entertain Llangefni Town Reserves as they pursue the Leaders Bro Goronwy in the chase for the title and then on Friday night the 10th of April , a chance for revenge in the final of the Megan Cup Below:-

A SINCERE THANK YOU to the two finalists

Tonight two excellent teams provided a match to savour with quality, determintion, some `blood and thunder tackles', pace on the break that wouldn't go amiss on a race track, outstandding saves, near misses, the wood work acting as an extra defender , some `poor finishing' and two well taken goals .......and the third, the winner an outstanding goal
