CEMAES WIN THE WILLIAM HILL ELIAS CUP

MASON MAKES IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR CEMAES - AND MAIR.

CONGRATULATIONS, CEMAES CLINCH CUP
In the William HILL Elias Cup final played at Nantporth, home of Bangor City F.C., in form Cemaes Bay and the current league leaders, Llandegfan Antelope clashed in what turned out to be an intriguing game. The Lope’ had scored in every league game played this season, but one............... at home to Cemaes Bay, and Cemaes Bay had similarly scored in every league game but one, and that was at...................... Llandegfan in the 0-0 draw. So the William HILL odds’ before kick-off were quite even.
Bay began the brighter and played the ball around confidently, and created a couple of chances and Keeper Ben Richardson had to go full length to turn a Sion Griffiths shot round the post, before the Lope’ had got into their stride. Using the left flank to good effect they had the Bay on the back foot and twice went close to opening the scoring, but they were vulnerable to the quick counter attacks. Cemaes were unlucky not to take the lead when a partial clearance from a corner saw Sion Hughes shot come back off the upright and Sion Wyn Griffiths nip in to head the ball.........against the cross-bar. The breakthrough came when a long ball up field found Steve Mason some six or seven yards outside the box, despite two defenders closing in on him, he held the ball up, shimmied to go left, losing one marker, turned to his right, and as the other defender came in drove the ball goal wards. His shot lacked power but skipped on the greasy surface and under the diving keeper to find the net, and give the Bay a half-time lead.
It was clear that Cemaes had changed their tactics as several long range shots rained in on the opposition goal, two skimming the cross-bar whilst keeper Richards dealt comfortably with the others. The game then changed as the Lope began to swarm forward in numbers. A fine run down the left by Jamie Roberts saw him play the ball inside to Richard Hayes whose shot was brilliantly turned the far post by Keeper Dan Jones at full stretch. The play was now mostly in Bay half as Lope won possession from nearly all the keepers’ goal-kicks and clearances as the excitement mounted. Not having looked at my watch once in the second-half, it was only the sight of Keeper Ben Richardson coming up for a corner – before being waived back, that made me realize the game was nearly over.....The corner was swung in, the ball was cleared, match official Stephen Jones blew for time and the cup belong to Cemaes.
