EIGHT GOAL William HILL ELIAS CUP CLASSIC

AS LLANFAIRPWLL RES., BOOK SEMI PLACE

The William Hill Elias cup quarter-final threw up a mouth watering tie of second placed Llanfairpwll Res., and third placed Maes y Bryn, and what a tie it turned out to be. Equal on points but high scoring Llanfair with a goal difference of +30 welcomed Maes y Bryn [+13 goal difference] for the right to a semi-final place.

A good close game was expected............ with, of course, GOALS, and the two teams didn’t disappoint the reasonable sized crowd, with a tremendous game where, when the hosts scored the visitors responded by pegging them back with equalizers, that is until the score stood at 3 v 3 with fifteen minutes remaining when Llanfair’ broke the sequence and took over
.
Llan’ took an early lead, top Scorer, Shaun Morris calmly tucking away a penalty awarded by match official, Mr Heinz Broering for handball in the box [1-0].But the visitors were quick to reply. A Lee Morris throw in was intercepted and the ball quickly crossed into the box where Andy Clarke brought it down and smashed it into the net [1-1]. It was end to end and anybodies game but with the half time brew being poured ready, Shaun Morris struck again with a neat finish at the near post. h/t 2—1

The visitors were soon level in the second period when their top scorer, Paul Ainsworth showed his alertness, nipping in to score with a `tap-in’ [2-2]. But Llan’ were ahead again [excuse the pun] with Steve Tindall rising head and shoulders above everyone to head home from a corner kick [3-2], only for Maes to level yet again. Wisdom Jaynes finding the net with a low shot through a crowded box.[3-3]. Shaun Morris then turned provider, playing in Greg Parry who finished in style driving the ball into the bottom corner. [4-3] The crowd waited for the visitors to equalize yet again as they forced a succession of corners and from one looked to have done so, but Lee Morris - striker Shaun’s brother, showed the importance of being effective at the opposite end as well, when he cleared off the line and deny them a fourth leveller
With time running out and Maes throwing everything at their hosts, yet another corner kick was floated into the box with almost every Maes player in there battling to tuck it away, but not this time as the ball was cleared, and Centre half Arwel Pleming raced the length of the pitch, his run matched by his left back Jason Owen, who he played the ball to and who calmly slotted home in a one on one with the keeper and ended the visitors.

A tremendous game and there was no need to ask for comments from the managers but instead share some of the comments from the spectators, `overheard’ as they were leaving the ground. “ What a game......two very good teams”. “ I felt a bit sorry for Maes y Bryn but even in a classic there has to be a loser”“I certainly enjoyed that and it’s why I prefer to watch the reserves”. The final `quote’ from Alf, a chap from the North visiting family, “ That was a credit North Wales football - never mind just the league” and who said later to Mr Dennis Bryant, the League Chairman, “ ...your league may lack quantity but certainly NOT quality”
