HOLYHEAD TOWN LIFT HUWS GRAY MEGAN CUP

IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH LLANGOED & DISTRICTl

HUWS GRAY ,MEGAN CUP FINAL

HOLYHEAD TOWN 1 V 0 LLANGOED & DISTRICT

The game kicked off as scheduled after the usual regime of handshakes on a very greasy surface which was blatantly pointed out throughout the match with several players losing their footing and slipping.
Unlike last week both teams were going at each other which was making for an entertaining game.
Holyhead having the better of the early chances with Leroy Parry coming closest to breaking the deadlock when he narrowly put the ball wide from a set play.
Both teams where restricting each other to long range efforts with both defences and midfields working tirelessly.
Llangoed thought it was deja vu when a huge claim for a penalty was turned down by the referee when Craig Jones of Llangoed hit a 25 yard strike only to see it blocked by the hands of the Town defender but Llangoed's appeals where waved away with the referee . Then four minutes later Town capitalised on really the only mistake of the match by the Llangoed defence when a long throw from Mike Davies found its way across the Llangoed box and with the team in gold ball watching a little it eventually came to Towns top scorer Tom Hadley 18 yards out who calmly side footed it into the opposite corner of the goal from where the keeper was stood.
This didn't deter Llangoed from the task ahead again knocking the ball around with confidence but the Town defence stood strong and where restricting Llangoed to what could only be described as half chances even after 5 successive corners Llangoed just couldn't find a way through.
The second half kicked off and Llangoed upped the tempo a little bit more and the challengers where now coming in thick and fast from both sides. Neither midfield had a chance to breath at one stage the ball was moving so quickly it was hard for players to take a touch before being challenged.
Llangoed kept pushing and the more they pushed the more vulnerable to the counter attack they became but thankfully for them they had a defence on top of their game as every counter that came their way was dealt with relative ease.
Llangoed thought they where going to get the breakthrough they deserved when substitute Llion Roberts was sent clear one on one with the Town keeper but he took his eye off the ball for a split second and took a very heavy touch on the ball to see it roll safely into the keepers arms.
5 minutes later a wonder strike from Llangoed midfielder Jamie Roberts had the keeper leaping high to pull off a tremendous save tipping the ball over the bar.
Mathew Roberts then took a shot from the edge of the box which went very narrowly wide of the far post.
Marksman Wayne Thomas found himself some space 6 yards out with a reasonably free header but put it wide of the same post.
At this point it was a case that no matter what Llangoed did it wasn't going to be their night. tonight after all two very talented teams where going at each other and virtually cancelled each other out of the game as it finished 1-0 to Holyhead. On the whole a very entertaining game one with plenty of positives for both teams to take out o
