IN LOCAL DERBY v MENAI BRIDGE TIGERS

In the KonX Wales Anglesey League, the local derby saw third placed Llandegfan Antelope and Menai Bridge Tigers battle it out with Tigers needing the win to bring them within two points of their neighbours but with a number of games in hand. It certainly seemed to be going to plan as Tigers seized the lead within fifty seconds of the kick-off when a ball pulled across the box was tucked away by leading scorer Lance Williams from the edge of the six yard box. The hosts were stunned and for a while the visitors began to command matters and create chances, a Lewis Hughes run down the right flank saw him put in a inviting cross but Andrew Barkers shot flew inches wide. Then on the opposite flank Dewi Caughter penetrating run and shot ended with the keeper pushing it away for a corner. The hosts now began to put their passes together and they opened the Tigers defence a couple of times before a teasing free kick into the box was headed on by Jacob Meaton to Gerwyn Roberts who did not connect cleanly but the ball sped into the far corner off a covering defender . The second period began with the Tigers midfield looking to add a second and when it came it was a move of sweet simplicity. Lance Williams played an inviting ball down the flank behind the defence which Andrew Barker anticipated and raced onto before pulling the ball back across the box that was invitingly just waiting to be driven home, and Lewis Hughes did not disappoint by putting the tigers back in front. But not for long, Lope played the ball forward and a hesitant defence waiting to see who cleared it first was still thinking about it as the alert Aled Hughes stole in to place the ball wide of the keeper and make it all square. The hosts enjoyed their best spell and tigers were holding on, that is until leading scorer jack Higgins – a second half substitute due to work commitments, made a run down the wing and pulled the ball across the penalty box to Luke Bedson who delicately laid it off into the path of Gerwyn Roberts and he calmly steered it wide of the out coming keeper, for his third goal in four games, and put the hosts in the lead for the first time in the game. This signalled an all out assault of the home goal by the Tigers but the lope defence was in determined mood and were not going to let the points slip once in front and Gerwyn' goal proved the winner.
Antelope manager Jamie Davies was understandably pleased as punch with the result, and said, “Although the whole team played well and showed tremendous character to twice come from behind , I thought that we defended superbly and took our chances well”. “ Our home form is improving week after week and we're now unbeaten at home since 21st August having faced then leaders - Morawelon and Menai Bridge in that time."

PICTURE: `On me head son’, is what Menai Bridge Tigers centre back [5] could be saying, even though it looks like a knees up as the lone Antelope forward tries to get to the ball in yesterdays local derby.
