BY GAERWEN WHO GRAB LATE LEVELLER WITH SION MORRIS SPOT KICK

With both the two scheduled quarter-final ties in the HUWS GRAY Megan Cup being called off, along with the William HILL Elias Cup Quarter-final tie, Trearddur Bay Reserves v Holy Isle, it left only the one League game in the KonX Wales Anglesey football league, with Llangoed & District looking to make it two away wins on the trot and further increase their lead on hosts, Gaerwen Reserves. Gaerwen, before kick-off were one place below and
six points adrift, so were eager to reduce the points gap with a victory, and following last week’s fine performance at Bro Goronwy they had a confident look about them.

The two teams played their part in providing the spectators with an entertaining and `high scoring ‘game with the hosts opening the scoring. Awarded a direct free-kick just outside the box, Liam Patrick Williams placed the ball with care and attention, before driving it into the roof of the net [1-0]. Gaerwen were awarded another free-kick, producing another goal. This time, marksman Sion Morris, sending the ball flying into the net. Gaerwen looked to be well and truly in the driving seat. But then again so they did last week as they led 2-0 against the ten men of Leaders Bro Goronwy. Maybe Llangoed had that in mind as they slowly, but surely fought back, and when a cross came in from the left, Mathew Owen hooked it in to pull a goal back and with half-time just five minutes away, Mark Jones met a right wing cross with a rasping left foot drive and it was all square.

The second period was just as entertaining and just when one side seemed to have the edge the other side turned it around. Mark Jones who had equalized just five minutes before the break gave Llangoed the lead for the first time in the game, taking on two defenders and leaving them in his wake, he ran on to confront the keeper in a one on one and calmly slip the ball past him [2-3]. But Gaerwen quickly bounced back, and Shaun Lock rounded off a neat passing move with the equalizer [3-3]. With six minutes left on the clock, Callum Graves looked to have won it for the visitors when he turned neatly, just inside the box to fire home [3-4] but back came Gaerwen once again, and a late penalty award – for a `push’ that had the visitors scratching their heads bewildered, whilst the hosts were appreciative the referee had spotted it. Sion Morris stepped confidently forward and duly obliged by planting he ball in the back of the net to leave a 4-4 score line that was probably a fair reflection of the game on the whole. The share of the points leaves the two sides in the same league positions as before kick-off and the six point gap separating them.
