AS CEFNI HIT LATE WINNER AFTER LLANGOED LEVELLED WITH THREE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES

HUWS GRAY MEGAN CUP ROUND 1

WHAT A GAME !!!!!!!! ................................

iT HAD TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED.

Llangefni Town Reserves welcomed Llangoed & District in the HUWS GRAY sponsored Megan Cup first round tie, and then set about dominating the game for just under the hour, racing into a three goal lead. With such a lead and two thirds of the game gone they certainly looked to have both feet in the next round and wondering whether they would travel to Cemaes Bay or Holy Isle.

But Llangoed showed, not only their ability, but also their determination and produced a spirited fight back after all had seemed lost, that saw them pull all three goals back in just fifteen minutes to leave the hosts worrying – not who they would be playing in the next round, but if they would even get there with Llangoed looking good at 3-3 and extra-time looming.

Cefni had opened the scoring in under three minutes of the kick-off, a run down the left and a cross to the back post found, youngster, Matt Jones who calmly picked his spot. The visitors settled a bit and were trying to impose themselves on the game but Dion Roberts cutting in from the left curled the ball into the far corner to double the lead [38]. Cefni came out for the second period buzzing and caught the visitor’s cold again. A run down the right saw the ball crossed to the far post and Iwan Williams headed home to make it `safe’? [50].

But it was anything but safe as Llangoed pulled one back and looked a different team as they went on to make it 3-3 thanks to Mark Jones and a Tom Parry double all in the space of fifteen minutes. Now it was certainly game on and the visitors were looking a threat as they pushed forward to snatch the `winner’, but after such a stirring fight back, their luck was out, when, with time almost up, Dylan Williams broke out, went past 2 players, to send his low drive in to the bottom corner of the net for the winner.

Some after Match Comments:

From,an obviously delighted,Trystran Owen, of Llangefni,
“... we bossed it in the first half, but the second was a different matter.”

And his team- mate, Gafyn Buckland summed up the exciting tie by saying,
“... at 3-0 early in the second half, If you'd have left the ground at this point, you'd never believe that Llangoed were about to score 3 goals in 15 minutes but that's what happened”.
He went on to say, “...Istanbul 2005 springs to mind and the less said about the goals from a defensive point of view, the better. Cefni had to put this mad 15 minute spell behind them and to be fair to the lads they regained their composure and we're in the draw for the next round and that's what counts.”

And overheard from two spectators talking to each other as they left the ground, “ ... that’s one thing about this Anglesey league, you get your moneys worth, the games are always close and exciting.”

The final comment is that of League Chairman, Mr Dennis Bryant,
“... it was an excellent game, end to end, exciting, and watched by a decent crowd. Both teams should be proud of themselves.” He went on to say “The game was a very good advert for football, not just the Anglesey League, but football in NORTH WALES”
