WITH 87TH MINUTE STRIKE

REPORT CEMAES BAY 1 V 0 LLANFAIRPWLL RESERVES

Saturday the 10th of January was the day the KonX Wales Anglesey Football League was set to resume after its Christmas / New Year break, though the weather took its Toll leaving just the one game surviving. That was at Cemaes where basement team Llanfairpwll Reserves were the visitors, and in normal circumstances the hosts would no doubt have gone into the game brimming with confidence . However, with Llanfair’ first team game falling foul of the weather, Cemaes Manager Darren Thomas anticipated a strengthened ` reserve’ side and planned accordingly for a much more competitive challenge. His thoughts rang true, and It was a lively open game - considering the conditions.
Llanfair, found it a difficult first half, playing uphill and against the wind, and Cemaes, through Huw Torr and Steve Mason, pressed quite well, but despite having lots of possession failed to produce any clear cut chances. In fact, the best chance came on thirty five minutes and produced a first class save by visiting keeper, Steve Thomas, who went full length to was keep out a Jason Owen `effort’ and prevent a certain own goal.

Half-time arrived with neither keeper having been beaten and the score locked at 0 – 0

In the second period, Llanfair, playing with the wind, were the stronger team and dominated for large spells. Manager Mark Jones was disappointed to see a `goal’ ruled out by the match official, but still felt his team would at least take a point, but with three minutes remaining, darkness descending, and frustration setting in, Sion Wyn Griffiths broke the deadlock. A Llanfair attack broke down and Griffiths was played clear and he ran on and struck a low shot across the goal into the far corner to the delight of his team-mates. Visiting manager Mark Jones, though beeing obviously disappointed at the late strike, said,“ I thought the team had played well and deserved something out of the game, but fair play to Cemaes they caught us on the break and scored with probably their only shot in the second half”.

Cemaes move into third place, two points behind second placed Valley, and six behind leaders Bro Goronwy but with two games in hand.
