SPO's SO SPECIAL

CLUB NAMES CLUB HOUSE AFTER HIM

Anglesey League clubs – and others, were disappointed that the FAW had refused to allow any games to be played on the 12th of November, and one club in particular had more reason than most to be upset at the postponements.

That club was Llangoed who had planned a surprise presentation to their Chairman, Owain T. Williams, before their scheduled game with Valley. The presentation was in recognition, and appreciation for his service, dedication to the club. A club he joined in 1956 as an under 9 and is still with today. Chairman, Owain – known as `SPO’ to everyone, celebrated his seventieth birthday last Thursday and sixty continuous yeas serving the club. Although he never played for the senior team he has always been a man helping with and organizing the running of the club. Without him at the helm Llangoed would have sunk out of existence. Marking the pitch putting nets up, running the Line, cleaning kits and changing rooms, basically an unsung hero for the club rarely getting noticed or praised for the thankless work he does at the club.

But Saturdays presentation, hopefully went some way towards showing just how much he is appreciated by the club, and it’s players, who have now named the canteen and changing room area as the Owen Williams Clubhouse as a sign of respect for a really special man. Which showed again when he asked everyone who might be thinking of giving presents for his birthday not to do so, but give that money instead so he can donate it to charity because quite simply, “... he has everything he needs health family and friends”.

LLANGOED & DISTRICT F.C wish to THANK G W CONSTRUCTION SERVICES who put the plaque up free of charge and Inigo Jones for supplying us with great service for the plaque as well

Outsiders view
I thank LLANGOED & District F.C. for the invitation to their presentation to `SPO’ last Saturday but as I said in my apology, I would be in Llandudno,
It was an excellent gesture by the club to try and show just how much they appreciate all he has done for them and in my opinion SPO fully deserved the recognition. I echo everything they say about him but would just like to add that he is not just an L: langoed & District man, but a FOOTBALL MAN. A man who supports local football. When the Leagues Cup Finals are played, regardless of Llangoed being involved or not, he will be there. In the thirteen years – or more, that I have been an officer of the League, there is only a couple of times I can remember not seeking him there.
In football people come and go. Some are in it for what they can get out of it. Not SPo. He is a `stayer, he’s been committed through good times or bad. Out of interest, in the sixty years since joining the club, they have been Champions twice and Runners-up three times. In the Dargie Cup they have twice been winners and runners-up and they have twice boasted the Player of the season the League’s top scorer
