LLANGOED TOPPLE CEMAES, VALLEY GR-EIGHT WIN AND HOLY ISLE HELD BY KEEPER OWEN's DISPLAY

6/12/14 BRIEF ROUND-UP Main reports will follow:-

With the top four teams in the KonX Wales Anglesey football league all playing at home it was essential that they collected three points as the title race `hots up’. But it didn’t quite work out that way with a shock or two during the ninety minutes and after.

Leaders Bro Goronwy welcomed Gaerwen Reserves, and did so with confidence following their recent results, and the home spectators no doubt anticipating another victory. But Gaerwen hadn’t read the same script and turned the form book upside down inside an eventful first half hour. Striker Sion Morris put the visitors ahead [27 and Paul Williams doubled their lead[30] and then the hosts were reduced to ten following a straight red and it looked `doom and gloom at Cae Nerys. But Bro never say die attitude – and a bit of help from the visitors] gave them a life line just before the break, Kelvin Jones trying to clear a cross defected the ball into his own net and it was 1-2 [43].
This gave the hosts hope and when captain Dylan Jones headed the equalizer [56] it was just the incentive they needed and five minutes later the turnaround was complete when Gareth Griffiths trying to get in before the attacker and clear a cross became the second Gaerwen player to find his own net to give Bro a 3-2 lead. There was no stopping the hosts and Taylor Jones increased their lead [68] and recent signing Ioan Hughes maintained his goal in every game record to make it 5-2 [72], and Bro could `relax’............. not quite as Kelvin Jones atoned for his earlier `mishap’ by finding the hosts net to make it 5-3 but the leaders were not going to let it slip and collected the three points.

Valley welcomed Llanfairpwll Reserves and were dominant from the off. Leading scorer Shaun Jenkins wasted no time in finding the net to give them the lead [15] and when Gareth Roberts was pulled down in the box Shane Boylyn tucked away the resulting penalty [20]. The penalty saw the visitors somewhat deflated and within two minutes Adam Roberts running on to a Connor Williams through ball made it three, and before half-time Gareth Roberts headed home from a free-kick. Substitute Deion Backhouse making his debut, celebrated by finding the net with his first touch.
The second half was going to seem like a long one for the Llanfair, as Connor Williams struck and Valley rounded it off with two headed goals to give Deion Backhouse and Gareth Roberts both a brace. Valley are now FOUR points adrift of Leaders Bro, but significantly have three games in hand.

Third placed Cemaes Bay welcomed Llangoed and District who they played on the opening day returning with a single goal victory. The scorer that day was Sion wyn Griffiths and today it was Griffiths who opened the scoring to put the Bay ahead and the home spectators sat back waiting for more. There were more goals to come but not until two minutes from the break and then it was a home goal but an equalizer scored by Mitchell Jones [43] A cross from the left was swung in that the keeper went up for, and seemed to have averted the danger but as he landed the ball fell loose and Jones poked it home. The second period began with the visitors probing and they were rewarded within four minutes of the restart thanks to a Jamie Roberts strike that was more or less a repeat of the first. This time it was a corner kick floated into the box that the keeper went up for but lost his grip of it and Roberts was there to force it home. There was worse to follow for Cemaes when Mathew Owen sent a long throw towards the home penalty box and Charlie McKenna was on it in a flash to make it three and give the visitors more breathing space [61] it was a `wake-up’ call for Cemaes who realised they had a battle on their hands to get one point let alone three. But despite the loss of influential play maker Callum Groves with some twenty minutes remaining and all their substitutes used, Llangoed held firm after Steve Mason pulled one back with twelve minutes remaining which made for a nail biting finish but Llangoed’s ten were not going to be denied their moment of glory and held on or a Valuable victory.

Holy Isle dominated their game against visitors Llangefni Town and on another day any one of their main strikers could quite easily have had a hat-trick, but not today with keeper Gwyndaf Owen between the posts. Owen gave a class A performance, the A standing for amazing, as he pulled off save after save. Cefni had taken the lead through regular marksman Llion Jones after some ten minutes and although the Isle created chances after chance they were continually denied by keeper Owen. The hosts were beginning to doubt they would be able to beat him but Gethin Rowlands finally managed to and although his equalizer only yielded the one point it was enough to see Holy Isle leap-frog Cemaes Bay into third place one point ahead.
