TIGERS TAKE TROPHY IN CHARITY SHIELD

MEMORIAL MATCH FOR JOHN [ROCK] ROBERTS

There is something about Cup Finals in the Anglesey league, and in particular THE DARGIE CUP, which always seems to go to extra-time and penalties. So it was hardly surprising that the KonX Wales Charity Trophy between the Dargie cup winners Llangefni Town and Champions, Menai Bridge Tigers should follow suit. The match was also a Memorial to John [rock] Roberts, a well respected Football Administrator in Anglesey and North Wales who had been very involved with Llangefni Town over quite a number of years, and Secretary of the Gwynedd League at the time of his death. That having been said, it was no doubt disappointing for the family, who had come along to scatter his ashes at the ground, to see such a poor turn-out.
The few who did `come along’ were treated to a very competitive encounter between two sides both who have stepped up in league stature in the coming season. It was clear to everyone right from the outset that there would be few goals with two well organised defences and then behind them keepers Gwynfor Williams and Dion Lewis both of whom were in excellent form, and it was no surprise to see the half end goal-less. Though it didn’t remain that way for long, as within two minutes of the re-start the Champions went a goal down, Iwan Williams finding the net for Town [47]
Tigers were doing their utmost to pull it back but the Cup winners were giving nothing away at the back, but the Champions kept their composure and as the game wore on you felt it was just a matter of time before they scored, and that was the case. With twenty minutes remaining the Tigers drew level, and not surprisingly it came from last season’s Top Scorer Gareth Barker.
Despite chances, there were no further goals so to `extra-time’,.......... except that the teams and organizers had agreed before hand, that in view of the heat they would go straight to penalties if level after ninety minutes. Llangefni who had secured the Dargie Cup following a PK shoot-out missed their first and in the end went down 3-2, leaving Tigers winners of the trophy in a fixture that will now become an annual event.
