AS MORAWELON BOOK SEMI-SPOT

Saturday 26th of January 2013
ROUND-UP – `

Following a ` white wipe out’ of the fixture programme last week, three of the four games played this week had managers, spectators enduring `nails biting' end to games.

In the KonX Wales Dargie Cup Morawelon , booked their
place in the semi-final in a nail-biting tie against Aberffraw that had looked to be well won by half- time as the Moras’ led by three goals to nil thanks to strikes from Chris Dewitt, Mickey Murphy and Barry Haigh. But Aberffraw, finalist for the last two seasons were determined to try and make three on the trot, and when Iwan Roberts pulled one back it gave them the lift they needed and minutes later following a Gary Bolton strike `it was game on’ . Stephen Jenkins scored to cap a magnificent fight back to make it 3-3. The Moras `lost’ Asa Thomas- dismissed for a second yellow and it looked gloomy for them, but they got a break when an own goal gave them a 4-3 lead, but there was more drama to come when Beffro’ were awarded a penalty with under two minutes remaining. Gary Bolton had the chance to take the tie to extra-time but keeper Nick Murphy went full length to push the ball out and as Bolton ran in to `finish it off, Murphy managed to block the rebound and take his side through to the semis.

In the KONX Wales sponsored Anglesey League, Leaders Pentraeth looking to further their lead with Morawelon on cup duty, entertained Llangefni Town reserves in what proved to be another `nail-biter’. Town went ahead after just three minutes. A ball played to Gary Griffiths some twenty five yards from goal did not seem to pose a problem but taking only a couple of paces he unleashed a tremendous shot that rocketed into the net to stun the leaders. Cefni, are a much improved side and with more belief in their ability played the ball around with purpose and style. They still led at half time, and though the hosts were not outplayed they failed to create much in the way of chances. They drew level after the hour mark following the introduction of McCann as a substitute. Chris Davies equalized, scoring his first goal with an outstanding thirty yard blockbuster, and with time was ticking away substitute McCann played an inch perfect ball from deep in his own half to Liam Hogan inside the Cefni penalty box to lay it into the path of Striker Gareth Roberts to strike home the winner and register three more precious points.

In the local derby thriller, Llanfairpwll took the lead at Menai Bridge when Ioan Hughes was played clear by Mathew Cole and ran on to beat the keeper [15]. The Tigers equalised when a direct free kick out on the left saw Dewi Caughter’s shot deceive everyone to nestle in the net [35], but Pwll were ahead again just before half time when Ioan Hughes tucked away a penalty. Seven minutes into the second half tigers levelled when another Caughter shot evaded everyone to find the far corner. Tigers went ahead when Andrew Barker weaved his way into the box to strike a deliberate curling drive round the defenders and past the keeper into the bottom corner [56]. But back came Llan and Joe Vousden pounced inside the box to level at 3-3 [62]. Livewire, Barker then combined with Lance Williams to allow the league’s leading scorer to find the net and make it 4-3 [75]. With less than two minutes remaining Llan were awarded their second penalty and Ioan Hughes, having already netted one, stepped up looking to take a share of the points but shot wide.

Llandegfan Antelope were not involved in a nail –biter and ran out comfortable winners against visitors Cemaes Bay. The man for all seasons, Gerwyn Roberts, struck a free-kick into the roof of the net on twenty minutes and three minutes later rounded off a brilliant five man move by thumping the ball home after Aled Hughes had back-heeled ‘ it into his path. Six minutes later new signing Gerwyn Morris celebrated his first game with a well struck drive into the bottom corner. Then on the hour mark it was another first, Daniel Owen finding the net with a low drive for his first goal for the club to make it four. The visitors were offered the chance to reply from the penalty spot but home keeper Ben Richards pulled off a fine save to put the hosts into third place in their first season in the league.
