TOM TAYLOR'S TWO TURNS TIE

By McCann Dave

AS PENTRAETH RECOVER FROM ONE DOWN

Pentraeth squeezed through to round three of the NWCFA Junior Cup, winners by the odd goal in three, against last season’s finalist Talysarn Celts, after a difficult game against their Caernarfon & District opponents. Pentraeth who had not hit less than five in any of their last five games were never going to maintain that record against a very strong Celts side that began well and took the lead through a Jack Jones strike after just fifteen minutes. Little had been seen of the home attack as the visitors starved their midfield of any creative opportunities to feed their forwards. With Talysarn leading and the half-time break well overdue the hosts were awarded a penalty – much to the disgust of the opposition who saw `no contact’. Captain Tom Taylor stepped up and as the keeper dived to his right blasted the ball straight down the middle to make it all square at the break. The second half saw Pentraeth try and string some passes together as they fought to gain authority. Within seven minutes of the re-start they were ahead with Taylor again the scorer, his effort coming down off the bar to cross the line. The `battle’ hotted up with tackles flying in from all angles, Taylor taking some punishment, whilst the visitors strikers also found their feet being taken from under them. The Celts pressed hard for an equalizer and were thwarted when a blistering 35 yard not only left the keeper rooted to the spot but left the cross bar shaking for two or three minutes afterwards.
In the heavy conditions and players tiring, there were openings for both teams but no further goals and Pentraeth go into round three with the Celts considering themselves very unlucky.
