PATIENCE PAYS OFF AS STRONG BRO FINISH BLOWS AWAY PG
Not at their best until late on Bro struggled before quick fire goals blew Llanfair PG away in a 4-1 win.
There was no time to dwell on Friday nights cup final loss as Bro played hosts to Llanfair PG after defeating the same opponents 3-1 away 7 days ago.
Again manager Lee Potter had the advantage of being able to rotate his squad with plenty of players waiting patiently, the majority coming from the juniors set up, to impress and only 3 players that featured in the cup final started this Bwlch Car Boot Trophy group match.
The way the home side started the match it looked like the so far 100% record in this competition was in grave danger as a simple pass couldn't be executed and the game took on a scrappy feel.
Llanfair gave as good as they got and matched their hosts in a uneventful opening period.
Thomas saved well low down to thwart home striker Piers Dudley after Rui Da Silva flicked on and after 17 minutes the away side, to no surprise, took the lead.
A throw in was flung into the danger area where it eventually fell for veteran striker Steve Hughes who wasted no time in dispatching his shot high into the net past Dean Corbett.
Hughes, now high on confidence, blazed over before Bro eventually started to trouble the away defence and string together some decent moves.
Taylor Jones running a mock before forcing Thomas into another pushed save around the post and then Rui Da Silva disappointing with a far post header from the resulting corner.
Da Silva sprayed a delightful pass into Ioan Hughes to force another save as Llanfair went in 1 up at the break.
Half-Time 0-1.
Slowly but surely Bro's quality on the ball improved and there looked like only one team that was going to produce the next goal.
Captain Chris Hough close from a header and then wayward with the rebound, Taylor Jones narrowly clearing the cross bar with another flicked header before fresh youthful legs from the substitutes bench seemed to turn the match.
16 year old step brothers Connor Lewis and Tom Wilkes entered the field and almost immediately it felt like a switch had been flicked as midfielder Da Silva started dominating play and it wasn't long before chances were taken.
In fact it was to be 3 quick fire goals in 4 minutes that turned the game on its head.
Firstly after 72 minutes Connor Lewis flicked on at the front post to leave Piers Dudley an instinctive finish for 1-1 and then secondly, and almost immediately from the restart, Ioan Hughes let fly with a controlled 30 yard screamer that had whip and pace on it to fly into the back of the net to give Bro a 2-1 lead.
Thirdly Piers Dudley gained his 2nd of the match, this time using his head to cleverly connect with Gareth Owens pin point free kick delivery to put the game out of the valiant visitors reach.
The icing was put on the cake as Hughes made it 4-1 with the last kick of the match, shooting through the grasp of gloves man Thomas to put Bro very close to finishing in the top position of their group.
Full-Time 4-1.
