FOR TREARDDUR BAY AT NEWBROUGH

Newborough, known as the draw specialist, were at it again with a 1-1 draw against visitors Trearddur Bay Utd. Reserves, but this time round a draw was the last thing their play deserved. In fact they had enough chances to win four games, the fact that they didn’t was down to the custodian for Trearddur Bay who gave an outstanding display between the posts. Matching agility with ability, goal keeper, Elwyn Durkan was exceptional , and some saves defy description, The game had begun well for Newbro’ who took the lead on twenty minutes when Rob Hughes headed home a right wing cross, but Bay hit-man Mike Williams levelled and then Durkan took over. The hosts were awarded a penalty and the normally sure Nathan Moore stepped forward only to be denied by a great stop by nineteen year old Durkan. Another penalty award on seventy five minutes saw Daffydd Harries step up to try his luck, but his shot was also saved. Starker Phil Bowkes came close to clinching the win but twice in the final ten minutes he was denied by point blank saves the Man of the Match Durkin. Trearddur Bay Manager Nigel Chambers said afterwards, “we almost felt guilty walking away with a point, but Elwyn was outstanding and deserved the point himself for his display.” It should also be noted that home keeper Peter Rogerson sowed his class with two or three first class saves.
