DESPITE RHYS OWEN PENALTY SAVE SPARKING A LLANGOED FIGHT BACK

Second placed in the League before kick-off, Llanfairpwll, and in form, Llangoed and District, with five straight wins on the trot, clashed for the right to a place in The LUCAS OIL DARGIE CUP semi-final. Llanfairpwll Res., having suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of today’s opponents just two weeks ago, were looking for `revenge’ in this prestigious cup competition.

The hosts were quick off the mark, Greg Parry showing his striking prowess to put them ahead [1-0] and it wasn’t long before the advantage was doubled. Another attack was brought to an abrupt end with the player being hauled to the ground in the box resulting in a penalty. Up stepped top scorer Shaun Morris and as everyone expected it was calmly tucked away [2-0].
Llangoed were not showing the form that had earned them five straight wins on the trot and were struggling to keep the opposition strike-force at bay. They fell further behind when, with a neat turn in the box, and rounding a defender, Shaun Morris claimed his second to make it 3-0.
In the game two weeks ago, Llangoed had led 3-0 only for Llanfair to pull it back to 3-2 and narrowly fail to level, but Llangoed didn’t look like they could turn this game around, and when the hosts were awarded another penalty..... that was it - four nil !, or so everyone thought as Shaun Morris placed the ball on the spot, stepped back ready to acclaim another `hat-trick’ ... but keeper RHYS OWEN hadn’t read the script and saved the spot kick with an excellent stop.

This was the inspiration that Llangoed wanted and were given another lift minutes later when they too were awarded a penalty, Damian Lee Jones making no mistake struck it past the keeper [3-1]. Suddenly the visitors looked a different proposition and when Henry Romeo, a recent transfer to the team, added a second [3-2] it became too close for comfort for the hosts. But Llanfair held firm and earned their place in the semi-final and will now meet Llanfairfechan – who knocked out favourites Bro Goronwy.

With apologies to Llangoed keeper Rhys Owen for crediting his penalty save to the opposition keeper in the earlier report.
