CEMAES BAY V BRO GORONWY - a neutral's view

By McCann Dave

followed by a guest report penned by Paul Scholes

With a comprehensive report, by Paul Scholes, included below, AND with one to follow from Alan, at Cemaes Bay the league has not done its own match report, but instead carries the view / thoughts of a very experienced and well respected individual in North Wales Football, who has done it all, seen it all.
With over forty years involvement in football in North Wales, that took in, player, manager, running a club, officiating and almost all aspects of Administration, web-Site manager , League Secretary Dave McCann was pleased to chat with him after last night’s game and now share with you his thoughts and views in the summary below:-

“ Last night’s William HILL Elias Cup Quarter-Final was an outstanding advert for the KonX Wales Anglesey Football League , the standard of BOTH teams play was excellent and it is easy to see why the fans turn out in such large numbers to support either of the two teams. I would have said there were close on 200 there watching the game, and clearly, Friday night football in Cemaes is a major success. Match Official, Stephen Jones of Bethesda, warrants a mention as he more than played his part with an almost faultless performance. He was always up with play gave his decisions clearly, was approachable, and spoke to the players during the e game. He quite rightly disallowed a Cemaes `Goal’ for a foul in the build-up, which must have obviously upset Cemaes as it would have put them 2v1 ahead at the time. I particularly liked the way Bro Goronwy accepted decisions and if a free kick was awarded against them it was a case of putting the ball down and stepping back ten yards with no `BACK-CHAT or descent.

Both sides had players of quality and in my opinion, Sam Regan and Dylan Jones were outstanding for Bro. Cemaes too had players who played well, but youngster Huw Torr deserves a mention for his dribbling runs, and he was always eager / committed to taking opponents on and continually caused problems for the Bro rearguard, as was the case when he was brought down in the box and the Bay tok the lead from the resulting penalty.

These two clubs will most definitely be around when the trophies are handed out come May,, and just because Cemaes have now lost twice to Bro Goronwy doesn’t mean they are out of it !!. Although they are six points adrift of the leaders, they do have three games in hand. On another day, the bounce of the ball, the rub of the green will go their way and suddenly all will be well.

2nd WIN IN A WEEK OVER CEMAES SETS UP SEMI SPOT FOR THE BRO

It was all right on Friday night as Bro came away from School Lane, Cemaes with a hard fought 2-1 victory after extra time .............

With the 2 sides only just met last weekend this cup tie was always going to be a tight affair as Cemaes looked to improve on last weeks league defeat in this Elias 2nd round tie.
Bro looked comfortable in the early periods but it was the home side who created the clearest chances.
Arwyn Gee guilty of not finding the net, unlucky with his 1st chance, a swerving shot that landed inches wide of the post and then with his 2nd, running past centre half Tom Galloway before shooting over.
The striker was to be involved in the opening goal for the Bay, a mazy Huw Torr dribble in the box ended in the ball dropping in the danger area, and with Gee in an offside position, Bro's defence hesitated but Sion Wyn Griffiths was on his toes to finish from close range for 1-0 after 16 minutes.
Wingers for both sides were troubling the respective full backs, Huw Torr's run setting up Gee to fire wide and Andy Williams at the other end turning Andrew Powell inside out before he as well shot wide.
On the half hour the tie was level, Sam Regan fancying his chances from long range on the greasy surface let fly and with the help of a slight deflection sent the ball past gloves man Aaron Jones.
Torr again had a trademark run before the interval and Bro's Liam Griffiths kept keeper Jones on his toes with a stinging shot as both teams went in again level at the break.
Half-Time 1-1.
The flow of the 2nd period was end to end in a tasty affair that was well controlled by Bangor official Steve Jones.
Clear cut chances were kept to a minimum as Bro looked the most likely to prevent the game going into an extra period.
Sam Regan trying his luck from a long range free kick not good enough to beat Jones but the stopper had to be at his best to dive full length to thwart a Tom Galloway pile driver.
The home dug out was dancing with delight with 10 minutes remaining as they believed they had taken the lead, Steve Mason's delivery being bundled into the net, only to be pulled back for an illegal challenge on the jumping Jonny Sweetser Hawkes in goal.
Taylor Jones had a close range chance blocked at the other end as the teams settled to slug out an extra 30 minutes.
Full Time 1-1.
The home side had the best of the early chances in the 1st period of extra time, another Torr run gave Lewis Connor an excellent set up, only to put his wayward effort sailing over the bar and then Dan Jones was presented with a chance to put Cemaes ahead in the cup tie.
Winning the foot race with stopper Hawkes and planting the ball over the keeper and on its way into the back of the net only for back tracking defender Dylan Jones to head clear from under his own cross bar.
It was then Bro's turn to go close, Taylor Jones heading wide before, after a tricky Connor Jones run, Andy Williams could only find the foot of the post with his low shot and gloves man Jones was grateful to drop onto the rebound on the line.
Half Time Extra-Time 1-1.
The decisive goal in the tie came half way through the 2nd period of extra time, Sam Aspinall floating in a pin point delivery where it was met by a stunning Dylan Jones diving header that gave Arron Jones not a prayer in stopping the ball nestling in the net to make it 1-2 for the away side.
With nothing to lose and time running out Cemaes tried their best to put Bro's defence under pressure but again came up against a well drilled and organised defence.
Sion Wyn Griffiths woefully shot over before the home side were given a last gasp chance to force a penalty shoot out.
A perfectly placed free kick on the edge of the box was set up for Cemaes captain Steven Mason, with the ground holding its breath, the forward failed to deliver and weakly placed his set piece floating over the bar to seal Bro Goronwy's progress into the semi-final.
Full Time Extra-Time 1-2.
Bro Goronwy will now face Trearddur Bay reserves or Holy Isle at home in the semi-final.
